Some days are so exciting you wish they would last forever. After a long run we encountered a SUPER POD, all 88 Southern Resident Killer Whales at the same time and place. On top of that we found the Orcas in a resting formation. All whales, including Orcas, are voluntary breathers and that means they have to be awake to breath. Whales rest but cannot sleep as we think of sleep. We found the Orcas moving very slowly and in very close proximity to each other. In this formation they gently touch each other to stay awake but all the while resting. After about 15 minutes the Orcas picked up speed and began to spread out but seeing a dozen animals on the surface all at the same time was a rare treat.
