At the end of the summer this year SpringTide Owners & Crew journeyed to the University of Victoria’s movie theater to view the long awaited movie Blackfish. The documentary focuses on the captivity of Tilikum, a Killer Whale who was involved in the deaths of three individuals, & the consequences of keeping such large & intelligent animals in captivity. The coverage of Tilikum begins with his capture in 1983 off the coast of Iceland showing how he was harassed by fellow captive whales and left in dark tanks for hours – incidents that biologists argue contributed to the whale’s aggression. The movie also focuses on SeaWorld’s claims that whales in captivity live longer, a claim that is known to be false! This documentary is a depiction of the cruelty of keeping Killer Whales in captivity & is a Must See!!!
