SpringTide and many of the other whale watching companies are proud to support scientific research about the animals we love to watch. Because the Southern Resident Killer Whales are listed as endangered species in both Canada and the United States physical contact with the animals is very limited. One unique method of study is accomplished by the use of a dog. This is the only dog in the world trained to smell whale poop. When he barks a volunteer hurries to scoop the poop which is analyzed to see what the Orcas have been eating and to look at hormone levels along with many other aspect of the whales’ life.
